One of the draws for me to come to MSU was the fact that it was nothing like my undergrad institution. I took seven years off between graduating and starting Law School, and the school did attend had a grand total of 1200 students. My undergrad career was different than most people’s, it was not littered with sporting events, instead my friends and I spent hours dressing up for ridiculous costume dances and went to school-wide theater events. Showing school spirit meant dressing in black and taking in pride in being unique (just like everyone else).
I lived briefly in Charlottesville, home of the University of Virginia, and because my apartment was essentially on land owned by UVA I got my first taste of college football up close and personal. My neighbors and I could sell the spots in our driveways to people wishing to park for as much as $50 on game days. People arrived about an hour before the game, drank a couple of beers, put on their orange sweatshirts and headed to the stadium. So, I thought I knew what tailgating looked like. I was wrong.
Eager to experience an American tradition up close and personal I bought tickets for the tailgate. The first morning I got up early, and rode to campus. It was nine a.m. and there were no less than six games of beer pong going on in front of houses on my way to campus. Already I knew that tailgating at MSU was a much bigger deal than it was at UVA. Once I got to campus I was greeted with a circus like sight. As far as the eye could see were personalized tents and signs for family tailgates. The whole campus smelled like barbecue, grown people were drinking vodka for breakfast, while their children ran around with painted faces and threw footballs at traffic. It was so utterly surreal that I walked around campus for quite a while before finding the law student tailgate. It was hard not to get rallied for the game around such an atmosphere of camaraderie and early morning intoxication. I had a big day of studying planned that first day, and was attended almost exclusively out of curiosity and to get free food, but it was almost intoxicating just to stand around with people and get pumped for the game. I myself have never attended a football game, fall to me has nothing to do with football and everything to do with the tense lead up to the world series (go Giants.) I figured that the first tailgate I saw would be the most foreign.
