Los Angeles has now distinguished itself as one of the areas deserving a second visit from Akashic Books’ NOIR story series (along with Brooklyn; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; and Manhattan). And in keeping with tradition, this sophomore collection carries the same subtitle as the others, with LOS ANGELES NOIR 2: THE CLASSICS .
Editor Denise Hamilton, an author in her own right who pulled together the first LOS ANGELES NOIR collection in 2007, could have simply filled this one with the kind of L.A.-based stories from the 1930s and '40s pulps that defined noir. Instead, she restricted such reprints to the opening section, then set her sights several years beyond. The result is a surprisingly satisfying collection that traces both the evolution of L.A. and noir crime fiction over the past 60 years.
That first section, entitled “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” leads off with “I’ll Be Waiting” by Raymond Chandler, the author most associated with classic L.A. crime fiction. It’s a richly atmospheric story of a hotel house detective and his observation of lost love and murder during one fateful night. Other notables include James M. Cain’s hobos riding the rails in “Dead Man”; “I Feel Bad Killing You” by Leigh Brackett, the sole female contributor of the early era; and the explosive and brutal “The Night’s for Cryin’” by Chester Himes. “After The War,” the second part, opens with Ross Macdonald — another obligatory author in any gathering of such fiction — and “Find the Woman,” where we meet Lew Archer opening his new P.I. office to his first case of family betrayal. Another highlight is James Ellroy’s recounting of “High Darktown,” the upscale Afro-American section of the city funded by drug money and other crimes.
